First Tuesday with Dan Grupe and Carmen Alonso

You won't want to miss our November conversation with Dan Grupe and Carmen Alonso from The Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Daniel Grupe is an Associate Scientist at the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research investigates psychological and neurobiological contributors to stress-related mental health disorders, and the benefits of mindfulness interventions for promoting more resilient responses to stress and trauma. The primary focus of his current work is the intersection of contemplative science and the criminal justice system. He has conducted federally funded research on the benefits of mindfulness training for law enforcement officers, and with University and community collaborators is working to develop mindfulness-based approaches to addressing unmet mental health needs for incarcerated individuals. His research is increasingly influenced by a community-engaged perspective, one that ensures this work reflects community priorities and serves to promote community health and well-being.

Carmen Alonso is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience in the field. She is dedicated to serving adults in both individual psychotherapy and group settings. She has taught mindfulness-based interventions to alleviate stress and decrease suffering to a wide variety of groups such as:

  • Patients with clinical depression and anxiety

  • Veterans with and without PTSD

  • Police officers

  • Spanish-speaking populations

  • Medical residents

  • School personnel

  • Inmates in maximum and medium security facilities

She has recently been involved in Restorative Justice groups (inside and outside of prison settings). She has combined her mindfulness teachings with Tae Kwon Do, a martial art she has been a practitioner of for over 30 years, including nearly 25 years as head instructor of the Choi Tae Kwon Do School at UW.
