People who are incarcerated across the country have generously responded to requests for photos and prose that are the inspiration for this show. A group of Arkansas painters, print makers, and sculptors each selected one inmate to represent through portraiture or other artistic means. Because cameras are often not allowed in American prisons, this is a unique opportunity to connect with people living behind bars and understand their stories as interpreted by local artists.
"Prison Portrait Project" is an exhibit showcasing the art of over 20 local artists, including Aida Ayers, Amanda Heinbockel, Barbara Miles, Cari Williams, Debi Fendley, Diane Harper, Dominique Simmons, Ellie Wheeler, Gregory Moore, Hamid Ebrahimifar , Jennifer Perren, John Kushmaul, Jose Hernandez, Kasten Searles, Katherine Strause, Laura Brainard Raborn, Matthew Castellano, Meikel Church, Miranda Deaton, Omaya Jones, Sondra Strong, Tanya Hollifield, and Zina Al-Shukri.
An opening reception will be held at the New Deal Gallery on Friday, Nov 1 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
